Berlin has one of the highest rates of dog ownership of any European capital. It also has a pet care market that, until recently, was largely informal — a combination of Facebook groups, neighbourhood WhatsApp threads, and freelance sitters with varying levels of commitment and capability.
ForRico was built specifically for this market: dense, urban, multilingual, and full of owners who have had at least one bad experience with unreliable care.
The Problems We Were Solving
Before building ForRico, we spent time with Berlin pet owners to understand where the current options were failing them. The answers were consistent:
No accountability when things went wrong. If a sitter cancelled last-minute, stopped responding, or returned a dog in worse condition than they left, owners had no clear path to resolution. Informal arrangements have no dispute mechanism.
No way to verify who was actually entering your home. Profiles on general freelance platforms can be created without any identity check. Owners were handing keys to strangers with nothing but a profile photo and a handful of reviews that may or may not reflect real experiences.
Inconsistent communication during stays. The most common complaint we heard was not that something bad happened — it was that owners didn't know whether everything was fine. Long periods of silence during a five-day boarding stay create anxiety even when nothing is actually wrong.
Fragmented search with no quality baseline. Finding a sitter meant searching across multiple platforms, cross-referencing reviews, and making judgments with incomplete information. There was no single place where you could compare verified sitters in your neighbourhood with confidence that a baseline quality standard had been applied.
What ForRico Does Differently
Sitter verification before they appear in search
Every sitter on ForRico goes through an approval process before their profile becomes visible to owners. This includes identity verification and a review of their profile completeness, service clarity, and pricing consistency by the ForRico admin team.
Sitters who complete additional verification steps — including background documentation — receive the verified shield badge displayed on their profile and in search results.
This process means fewer options, not more. That is deliberate. Quantity without a quality baseline creates noise. Berlin pet owners already have noise; they need a curated shortlist they can actually trust.
Payment held until the booking is confirmed complete
When you pay for a booking on ForRico, the funds are held until you confirm the stay completed without issue. Sitters are paid after completion.
This structure has two effects: it aligns the sitter's incentive with the quality of care (not just the acceptance of the booking), and it gives owners a clear mechanism for raising issues before money changes hands.
Structured communication built into the platform
Every booking includes access to the in-app chat. For active bookings — particularly boarding stays — sitters can send update photos and messages directly through the platform. Owners can request updates without needing to manage a separate WhatsApp thread.
For owners who have experienced the anxiety of silence during a long stay, this structure is the most immediately appreciated feature.
Meet and greets before payment
For any booking beyond a single walk, ForRico supports scheduling a meet and greet before payment is required. This means you can meet the sitter, observe how they interact with your pet, walk through the routine and emergency protocols, and make a decision without financial pressure.
If the meeting does not go well, you cancel with no charge.
Support when something goes wrong
ForRico has a support team available for active bookings. If a sitter cancels last-minute, stops responding, or there is a dispute about service quality, owners have a clear path to resolution — not just a terms-of-service page.
For incidents — situations where a pet was injured or something went seriously wrong — the platform has an incident reporting system that creates a documented record and escalates to the admin team.
Who ForRico Is Built For
Owners who travel regularly. If you leave Berlin more than a few times a year, you need a reliable care arrangement you can repeat. ForRico's booking history, review system, and re-booking flow are designed for repeated use, not one-off searches.
Owners with pets that need specific care. Older dogs with medication requirements, reactive dogs who need experienced handling, cats who need twice-daily check-ins — these are not edge cases. They are common. ForRico's profile system allows sitters to specify what they can and cannot handle, and allows owners to filter by those specifics.
Owners who have had bad experiences. The informal market has left a lot of Berlin pet owners with stories they would rather not repeat. If you have had a sitter cancel without notice, fail to communicate during a stay, or return your pet in a state that raised questions, the accountability structure of a platform booking is specifically what you need.
Sitters who take their work seriously. ForRico is also built for the professional end of Berlin's sitter community — people who have invested in care quality, who want their verification status to be visible, and who want a booking flow that does not require managing payments through bank transfers and confirmation via WhatsApp.
Honest Limitations
ForRico launched in Berlin. The sitter network is growing, which means that in some parts of the city, you may see fewer options than on a broader platform that applies no quality filter.
We think that is the right trade-off. Forty verified sitters are more useful than four hundred unverified ones if what you need is confidence that the care is real. But it is worth being honest: if you live in a part of Berlin where the network is still thin, you may need to look at options outside our current coverage radius.
This will change as the network grows. If you are a sitter who meets the standard and wants to join, the application is open.
A Note on Pricing
ForRico does not compete on being the cheapest option. Verified care with a payment-hold structure, meet-and-greet support, and a dispute mechanism costs more to operate than an unverified listing board.
Pricing reflects the quality of the sitter and the complexity of the care, not a race to the lowest number. If you are choosing a pet sitter based primarily on price, ForRico may not be the right fit. If you are choosing based on confidence that your pet will be cared for correctly when you cannot check, it probably is.
What Owners Tell Us
The feedback we hear most often from Berlin pet owners is not about specific features — it is about relief. The relief of knowing there is a record of every booking, that the sitter's identity has been checked, that updates will come without having to ask, and that if something goes wrong there is a process for resolving it.
Pet care is not a commodity. It is a trust arrangement between an owner, an animal, and a person entering your home and taking responsibility for something that matters to you. ForRico exists to make that arrangement clearer, more accountable, and more reliable than the alternatives.
